The Festival

Definitive Figures is a festival of performance and community events created to amplify the femme body in space. Conceived and produced by New York dance artist, Donna Costello, and New Orleans physical theater creator, Jenny Sargent, Definitive Figures aims to elevate and explore feminist ideas while negotiating our plural identities of race, class, and sex in a patriarchal society.

Why the Festival?

We (Jenny and Donna) began an artistic process together over 4 years ago. In that time we created a movement-theater duet, Jitterbug and the Aftermath. When it became time to think about how to share this work, we began to envision a festival. In the collaborative, experimental spirit of our duet, the idea of Definitive Figures: A FemFest of Performance was born.

We wanted to celebrate the many conversations we had about process, art forms, identity, female-ness and feminist ways of being, and what we face in our bodies and in the world at this time in our lives. Not wanting to show our work in isolation, we wanted to create an opportunity for further conversations and to connect with other femme and female-identified artists through creative questioning. New Orleans was the perfect backdrop for this inaugural festival: a place that values community, art-making, and taking the time to gather together. Our organizing approach for this festival includes many voices, and we are fortunate to have on our producing team Jen Davis from New Orleans and Nasrene Haj from THE CREATORS COLLECTIVE in New York City.
